Among the Dogon people, the horse plays a significant role in mythology and cosmology. The creator god Amma, using the four elements, creates a "living seed," the foundation of the world. Four pairs of twins, the ancestors of humankind, known as the eight Nommo, are then formed. After a period of great chaos caused by Ogo, one of the twins, Amma sacrifices the other twin, then resurrects him, giving him a human form. The resurrected Nommo descends to Earth using an ark that transforms into a horse.
