Statuary is, with masks, the second worldwide known genre of African art. The function and the meaning of the statues and statuettes are multiple: intermediaries between the world of the living and the hereafter, symbols of fertility, tools of the witch doctor, protections against the sorcerers, incarnations of the husband or the mystical wife, ancestors’ representations ... this list is far from exhaustive. As in the other categories of our site, West Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast) is particularly well represented with in particular Dogon statuettes of the 50s, exceptional Lobi batebas, Mossi dolls (biga).
